Starting July 2025, the Canada Disability Benefit will provide a monthly payment to working-age Canadians with disabilities who have low income.
Eligibility Criteria
To qualify, applicants must:
- Be a Canadian resident for tax purposes
- Hold a valid Disability Tax Credit certificate
- Be 18 to 64 years old
- Have filed a 2024 income tax return
- Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, protected person, temporary resident (with 18+ months in Canada), or registered under the Indian Act
Benefit Amount
Maximum: $2,400/year ($200/month) from July 2025 to June 2026
Reductions apply based on income:
- Single: 20% of income over $23,000
- Couples:
- 20% of income over $32,500 (if only one is eligible)
- 10% of income over $32,500 (if both are eligible)
Income exemptions: First $10,000 (single) or $14,000 (couple) of working income
Additional Notes
- Income is based on the most recent tax year before the payment period
- Spouses must also file a tax return unless exempt due to residency, separation, or safety concerns
How to Prepare
- Apply for the Disability Tax Credit
- File your 2024 tax return (and your spouse’s, if applicable)
- Ensure you have a Social Insurance Number
